(Working) Artist Statement

Thinking back, the human body has danced through my work since childhood. As a young girl, I found extreme joy in my hours spent dancing, running, and climbing through the landscapes of my youth. I started designing and constructing garments and costumes at a very young age. As I became more seriously interested in making “ART”, I learned to draw by copying images out of fashion magazines. Later, these drawings morphed into illustrations of female forms… fairies, goddesses, my sisters, and self portraits. I have had exposure to many forms of movement from ballet and modern dance, to more alternative practices such as Gyrotonics and The Feldenkrais Method. These experiences made me keenly aware of the ways bodies moved through space and I delighting in seeing these movements mirrored in the natural world.

My current body of work fixates on simple organic systems like roots, veins, bones, and branches, intertwining plant forms with human anatomy. In these images, human spines morph into plant stems and rib cages sprout blooms . These visual metaphors highlight my belief that we as humans are not separate from nature, but part of the same intertwining networks.
